![]() ![]() ![]() And whenever you get bored, you can always just hop back into the other gamemode for a while. ![]() I've tried many ideas, maps with a huge amount of water and 1v1'ing the British, a huge 8 player mode with the largest map size possible etc. There are an insane amount of scenarios you could potentially play through, either through the campaign or through Skirmish mode. When you die, it never feels as if you couldn't try something else, or couldn't learn anything. Whenever you decide to invade a neighbouring town by building up a navy and bombing the shit out of their town center is euphoric and through the slow buildup you have insane payoffs in the space of an hour.īut if this sounds intimidating I can't stress enough how beginner friendly the whole thing feels. The game also does a great job at making you *feel* smart. The game is incredibly complex without ever feeling intimidating, there are so many different routes to try and different methods that no one game can ever play the same. and you start with just a few peasants and a scout to an empire (again, wow imagine.) I'm being sarcastic but it's deceptively simple. The game is split up into "ages" (wow imagine my shock), in each age you unlock new buildings, new research, new units etc. It's genuinely incredible how fun it is to play through these sets, I am learning more and more about iconic historical moments through insanely addictive gameplay. The amount of stuff to do in this game is crazy, there is Skirmish mode which is the more typical RTS battle you'd expect, but then there is an INSANE amount of content in the form of campaigns, which play through real historical events and transform it into gameplay. What I was NOT expecting was how low the barrier to entry is, I feel like anyone could pick up this game and find something they like. But hey, I'll give it a shot for the sake of saying I did, and if it's too scary I'll just abandon it. I love city builders like Cities Skylines and management and tycoon games, but the idea of competing against other people with resource management and commanding troops always sounded intimidating to me. This game has always intimidated me, alongside every other strategy game. It's currently only 3 bones for me, so I thought why not. So this winter sale I picked up Age Of Empires 2: Definitive Edition.
